Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a debilitatinginfectiousdisease which becomeslethal if untreated. The digenetic parasite is characterized by diversity and complexity based on geographical placement. In India, approximately, 100,000 new cases of VL occur annually and nearly 90% cases come from Bihar. Chemotherapy, fraught with cost and side effects, remains the key element in the treatment of VL as there are no vaccines to prevent VL infection. With ever increasing (37-64%) unresponsiveness of newly diagnosed cases to the standard drugs is a new challenge to current line of treatment. The depressed immune system due to infection is not always able to control the disease or augment the effects of the drugs. Therefore, we took the challenge towards the discovery of an effective and safe drug molecule from natural resources and search for vaccine molecules in leishmanial parasites with long lasting effects. Under the present circumstances this approach appears to be the only route to win the battle against VL. My research interest mainly are in the area of Immunobiology, chemotherapy and molecular biology of Leishmanial  parasites. We are involved in the identification and molecular characterization of leishmanial vital enzymes/proteins, antileishmanial lead generation, towards application of various delivery systems for antileishmanial drugs (that are toxic but effective) as well as protective antigens, development of new models for disease understanding and in vitro screening models (green fluorescent tagged parasite) that are of significant importance in leishmania research and have significant potential implications in improving human health and alleviation of human suffering.

My current research program are as listed below:
