Fermentation Technology

AIMS & OBJECTS
The demand for new and improved commercial biological products and processes, employing living cells or their cellular components is growing and may be met through bioprocessing. It involves the production of various biotechnological products and upscaling with highly desirable characteristics and quality. The Departmental activities are centered upon upstream and downstream processing, process monitoring and optimization of biological production levels. Various products of microbial growth and biotransformation are currently handled at laboratory and commercial pilot fermenter levels for production and scale up studies. Search for novel antimicrobial (antibacterial/anti-fungal) metabolites through newly isolated microorganisms is the priority area of the Departmental research. Microbial biotransformations, bio-catalytic activity optimizations with different bioreactors, cell immobilization are other important biotechnological studies currently undergoing in the Department.

Current Areas of Research
Antibacterial compounds through microbial source.

Novel antifungal compounds from active microorganisms.

Biotransformations.

Studies on enzymes such as ß-galactosidase, protease, lipase etc.

Bioreactors and biocatalysts processing.
